FIELDBROOK / MCKINLEYVILLE, Humboldt County — October 30, 2026. A wildfire fuel-reduction project on Murray Road is intended to improve one of the principal routes connecting Fieldbrook and McKinleyville. McKinleyville Community Services District says the 2026 Murray Road Fuel Break Project involves removing hazardous vegetation and so-called ladder fuels along the corridor, reducing barriers to firefighters and supporting safer evacuation routes.
The district announced that work could begin during the week of September 7 and published a subsequent update for work beginning during the week of October 5. Its notice says the Murray Road parking area and parts of the McKinleyville Community Forest may close temporarily. This is a notice of possible intermittent access restrictions, not confirmation that the entire road or parking area is closed continuously on October 30.
Why focus on Murray Road?
For residents of Fieldbrook and nearby rural properties, a route connecting communities can be important during a wildfire evacuation or when emergency crews need to enter an area. Tall brush and undergrowth can contribute to fire spread along a road, complicating access and producing additional heat and smoke.
The district calls this work part of Phase VI of its Community Wildfire Protection Plan. Its objectives include reducing ladder fuels, improving the working environment for firefighters and protecting the usefulness of an important corridor. Those objectives describe intended benefits, not a certified reduction in evacuation times or a guarantee of fire safety for every nearby home.
What areas might close?
According to the district’s official advisory, restrictions may include the Murray Road trail parking area and certain portions of the McKinleyville Community Forest while crews work. The wording does not impose a blanket closure on every road leading to Fieldbrook or establish that all trails are closed for the entire fall season.
Visitors should follow posted barriers, contractor instructions and forest trail notices. Drivers should not park where crews require access or attempt to bypass temporary closures. For a current route status, contact the district rather than assuming a September announcement remains unchanged.
How is fuel reduction carried out?
Vegetation-management projects often combine selective removal of dense undergrowth, treatment of small trees or brush, and cleanup of combustible material, depending on the site. The district’s public notice identifies the aim as hazardous fuel reduction but does not publish a completed acre count or species-by-species removal log in the brief advisory.
Residents concerned about effects on wildlife, water quality or larger protected trees can ask the agency for its current treatment map and approved environmental documents. The district’s work should not be conflated with a separate state-funded Fieldbrook Valley redwood restoration project in the van Eck Forest: that effort involves another organization and different land.
Whom can residents contact?
The district publishes notices, maps and project updates at its News and Project Updates page, and can be contacted at (707) 839-3251. During any actual wildfire, follow Humboldt County emergency alerts and law enforcement instructions; a vegetation project is not an evacuation order.
