FIELDBROOK, Humboldt County — October 30, 2026. California’s public local-bridge funding schedule identifies an upcoming project to protect the Fieldbrook Road bridge over Squaw Creek against scour—erosion of streambed material around bridge supports or foundations during moving water. The bridge, numbered 04C0203, is about 2.9 miles northeast of State Route 299 in Humboldt County.
Caltrans’ October 13, 2025 Highway Bridge Program listing assigns an estimated $112,000 to a “Standalone Scour Countermeasure Project”. Its financing table separates design work from later property-related and construction phases. It does not say that the bridge is closed, that repair crews are on site today, or that the full $112,000 has already been spent.
What exactly is funded in the published schedule?
The bridge entry appears on page 47 of Caltrans’ 2024–25 through 2029–30 Highway Bridge Program regional project list, under Humboldt County, project HBP-ID 4842. The schedule assigns the following estimated amounts:
- Preliminary engineering: $16,000 programmed in fiscal 2025–26, with a $12,800 federal portion and $3,200 local match.
- Right-of-way or property-related phase: $5,000 shown in the “Beyond” column.
- Construction: $91,000 also shown beyond the current 2029–30 program horizon.
- Total estimated project: $112,000, of which $89,600 is listed as federal participation and $22,400 as local match.
Crucially, a phase listed as programmed is not proof that a construction phase has been authorized, a bid awarded, or the fieldwork completed. The 2025 report expressly warns that contractual funding levels are set at the time a phase is federally authorized or obligated. Current Caltrans and county records would be needed to verify subsequent changes since that schedule.
Why would a bridge need scour protection?
Scour can occur when fast-moving runoff removes streambed material near abutments or bridge foundations. Engineers may design countermeasures such as appropriately placed rock protection, structural stabilization, erosion controls or other site-specific techniques. The Caltrans entry only labels the project type; it does not publish a final design or identify which method will be used at Squaw Creek.
This information is not a finding that the bridge is imminently dangerous. An investment in preventive protection can be planned even while a crossing remains open and serviceable. To establish present bridge condition, residents should request the latest National Bridge Inventory inspection and county engineering report rather than infer an emergency from the word scour.
What should Fieldbrook road users watch?
Fieldbrook Road connects rural neighborhoods, farms and local businesses. Even minor bridge work can temporarily affect vehicle access if crews require a narrow work area. However, the public funding schedule provides no approved road closure or detour date. Drivers should check Humboldt County Public Works for any future traffic-control announcement.
Residents can ask Humboldt County and Caltrans District 1 when the preliminary engineering phase was completed, whether the scour-protection design is approved, and when construction funds might be programmed. The construction phase’s placement in the Beyond column is important: a proposed total cost cannot be translated into a promise of completion in 2026.

Caltrans Division of Local Assistance, October 13, 2025, Highway Bridge Program — Humboldt County Bridge 04C0203, HBP-ID 4842, PDF page 47. The source distinguishes preliminary engineering programmed for FY 2025–26 from construction shown beyond the listed five-year horizon.
Fieldbrook News independently analyzed the state bridge funding table on October 30, 2026. Current construction funding authorization, road conditions, a final engineering method and future detours have not been independently confirmed. This is a planned preventive project, not a new active road-closure alert.
